The Need for Community in Maternal Health
The world we live in today is not the world it was 100 years ago – or even 20 years ago. We need community now more than ever, especially in the maternal community, supporting both gestating and postpartum women alike.
Infertility rates are rampant in the U.S., and studies say 1 in 7 women are taking medication for severe postpartum depression. Companies are losing an estimated $90 trillion a year in sick leave and FMLA due to postpartum depression, pregnancy, and birth-related issues.
What’s causing this crisis and why are mothers so affected?
- The depletion of nutrients in our food, starting with the depleted soil it’s grown in
- The increase in vegetarian and vegan diets without proper supplementation
- A high-stress, highly distracted culture addicted to technology
- A lack of sunshine, fresh air, and ancestral living practices
All of these combined are negatively impacting fertility, pregnancy health, birth outcomes, and postpartum experiences. As a culture, we have become disconnected from how we were designed to live—and it's showing in our most vulnerable seasons of life.
The Genesis of Health: Preconception and Early Childhood
When we step back and look at the genesis of anyone, true health starts in preconception.
If we can start rebalancing and de-stressing the mother before and throughout her pregnancy, we can make a profound, lasting impact—not only on her health, but on her baby’s genetic expression for health across their lifetime.
From conception to age two, the foundation is laid for the child’s health, wellness, and prevention of chronic diseases. What happens during this early period can influence a child’s well-being for decades to come.
